International Community Scientists' Academy

OUR VISION

To foster a global movement where citizens and communities conduct their own scientific explorations and interventions, to lead to greater control over the conditions that shape their health and well-being.

OUR MISSION

To engage, train and  support lay “community scientists” in a shared endeavour that will equip them with research and health promotion capabilities to implement evidence-based, community-owned interventions across a wide range of settings and to connect with each other in a national and international mutual learning network that shares experience and strengthens community-led science.

Six Guiding Principles

Community ownership

Community scientists are the owners of the knowledge they generate, not subjects of it.

Evidence with rigour

Community-generated knowledge is held to sound scientific and ethical standards, regardless of its informal origin

Capacity before intervention

Skills are built within the community first, so that action and enquiry are led from within rather than delivered from outside

Peer learning

Community scientists learn most from one another, across varied settings and populations.

Non-partisan practice

The Academy and its members remain independent of political, religious and ethnic anchored movements

Inclusion

Age, gender, disability, ethnicity or economic status are not barriers to becoming a community scientist
